Yellowstone franchise creator, Taylor Sheridan, has revealed that Paramount's misunderstanding of the first spinoff series 1883 led to the creation of the latest prequel, 1923. Despite Sheridan's clear intention for 1883 to only last one season, Paramount expected a second season despite the death of many characters.
From this misunderstanding, Sheridan developed 1923, which introduces a new generation of the Dutton family and explores the early 20th century when pandemics and historic events plagued the Mountain West. The series, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, set a ratings record at Paramount+, surpassing the debuts of Sheridan's other series. The unique flexibility of the Dutton family allows for standalone stories tethered to the Yellowstone franchise.
