The first episode showcases the introduction of a new type of zombie called a Burner, which has acidic blood and skin. Nicotero explained that the decision to add variant zombies was made to raise the stakes and make the spinoff unique. He also hinted at the possibility of other zombie types appearing in France. The introduction of Burners changes the rules of how Daryl can protect himself and adds to the danger he faces. Fast Walkers, as well as other unknown variants, will also challenge Daryl throughout the series.
