In the 1923 story, a Native American girl named Teonna Rainwater is forced to join a Catholic convent school where she is subjected to brainwashing and abuse. However, Teonna rebels against the nuns and father principal of the convent, determined to preserve her faith and culture.

She ultimately escapes the convent after killing the nuns who had sexually assaulted her. Despite the brutality she faced, Teonna's strength and determination to live life on her own terms is an inspiring example of perseverance in the face of adversity.
