Matthew Perry had high hopes for the next phase of his life just one year before his sudden demise. In anticipation of the release of his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, in 2022, the former Friends star spoke to PEOPLE about his evolving perspective on love and his aspirations of becoming a father.

Perry confessed that he had a profound fear of love, but with considerable effort, he overcame it. He expressed his intention to learn as he goes along, acknowledging that he has changed. He stated, "I'm not interested in spending time with someone I don't know or someone I'm not truly attracted to.

The next person I commit to will be someone I'm in love with, and I won't let my previous fears hold me back."

He added, with newfound confidence, "I've shed the fear that once controlled me, so everything feels different. I'm not afraid of love anymore, so the next woman I date better beware."

Additionally, Perry disclosed his readiness for fatherhood and building a family. He revealed, "I truly believe I would be an excellent dad. I grew up surrounded by children, which is probably why I feel this way.

I can't wait for that chapter to begin."

Reflecting on his past relationships, including a broken engagement, the actor admitted that he was always the one to end things. Fear was his driving force, and he would convince himself that there was something wrong with his partner, leading him to break up. Over time, he realized that he couldn't attribute the faults to everyone else; he was the common denominator. Anxiety about being hurt caused him to leave relationships preemptively.

Perry tragically passed away on Saturday at his home in Los Angeles from an apparent drowning. Law enforcement sources reported no signs of foul play or drugs at the scene.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed they responded to a call regarding the death of a male in his 50s, without disclosing the deceased's identity.

On Sunday, the actor's family issued a heartfelt statement through PEOPLE, expressing their devastating loss and acknowledging the enormous impact Matthew had on the world as an actor and a friend. They expressed gratitude for the immense outpouring of love and support.
