Matthew Perry Honored at First Permanent Central Perk Coffeehouse!
2023/12/13

Central Perk Coffeehouse, the beloved café frequented by Monica, Chandler, and the gang on Friends, is set to open its doors in Boston on November 14. PEOPLE has been given an exclusive first look inside the shop. The café is inspired by the hit NBC series, which aired from 1994 to 2004 and starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry, and Matt LeBlanc. Central Perk will be the city's first permanent coffee shop and restaurant serving light fare and will be located on Newbury Street, one of Boston's most famous boulevards.

The opening of Central Perk was initially delayed following the death of Matthew Perry on October 28.

To honor Perry, the coffeehouse will now dedicate its new opening day to him. The 2,600-square-foot venue is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Discovery Global Themed Entertainment and CenPer, and it will be filled with Friends-inspired memorabilia and subtle references to the show's characters and plot lines. Of course, the café will feature the iconic orange couch. Coffee cup sleeves will also be available, showcasing famous quotes from each of the six Friends characters.

Central Perk is not an attempt to duplicate the show's original set, but rather a modern interpretation of what a coffee shop or Central Perk would look like in 2024, according to Glen Coben, founder and principal designer of Glen & Co Architecture.

The shop will provide a warm and inviting space for people to gather and celebrate the small moments as well as the big milestones in their lives.

In addition to offering coffee from their existing line, Central Perk will serve menu items from local vendors, including shared plates and beverages like local beers and natural wines. The menu will also feature subtle references to the show, such as Monica's jam and Grandma's Chicken Salad. Customers can also purchase merchandise with the café's logo, including sweatshirts and drinkware.

Renowned chef Tom Colicchio, who previously appeared on Top Chef, serves as an investor and advisor for Central Perk. He believes that people will use the café as their everyday coffee shop and emphasizes that the quality of the coffee and food will be top-notch.
