Everything to Know About Yellowstone’s Spinoff Series ‘1883: The Bass Reeves Story’
2023/11/21

Stream+ is back with another exciting announcement! After the successful run of Yellowstone's 1883 on Paramount+, the network has confirmed that the series will be returning, but with a twist. The sophomore season, set to premiere in late 2023, will introduce new characters and storylines as it focuses on the inspiration for the Lone Ranger. The official logline for 1883: The Bass Reeves Story reads, "Known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.

" This news comes three months after Paramount+ hinted at the "next chapter" of 1883, indicating that the sequel will follow in the footsteps of the original series, which starred Sam Elliott, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw.

The first season of the Yellowstone prequel, which premiered in December 2021, depicted the story of how the Duttons came to own the Yellowstone Ranch land. The season concluded with the characters arriving in Montana, providing a fitting ending according to creator Taylor Sheridan.

Sheridan stated, "I'm not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily after, or didn't. I also wanted to create something you could watch and be completely enthralled and fulfilled, having never seen Yellowstone. Let it live on its own merits."

He aimed to create a "close-ended" conclusion that would allow for exploration of new territory without relying on existing content. He described the next installment as a "peek through a different window into a different era" and emphasized that these are not spinoffs but complete stories with common roots. The vision of the producer has not only resonated with the audience but also with the cast members.

Golden Globe nominee Sam Elliott, who plays Shea Brennan, admitted that he wasn't familiar with the Yellowstone franchise when he signed on for 1883. He stated on Marc Maron's "WTF" podcast, "Yellowstone is all over this. We're tainted by Yellowstone, which, on some level, I can't stand. Because I think 1883 stands alone and will. Once it comes out, people are gonna say, 'Oh, yeah — the only connection there is that it got John Dutton to Montana.'" The spinoff series, which is set to premiere on Paramount+ in late 2023, has already generated excitement. David Oyelowo has been announced as the lead, playing the role of Reeves.

Dennis Quaid and Garrett Hedlund have also been confirmed as cast members. Additionally, Cole Hauser, who has previously appeared in the Yellowstone universe, will be portraying a new character in 1883. In March 2023, Deadline reported that Joaquina Kalukango, Lonnie Chavis, Rob Morgan, Ryan O'Nan, and Justin Hurtt-Dunkley have joined the cast of the new western series. Stay tuned for more updates on 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, as the series promises to captivate and entertain viewers with its standalone storyline and compelling characters.
