According to Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead comic book series, he would like to see a more "faithful" adaptation of the story on AMC in the form of an animated series.
In a response to a fan letter in The Walking Dead Deluxe #79, Kirkman mentioned that he believes it would be enjoyable to have an animated adaptation, but he is uncertain if AMC would be interested. Although it may seem unlikely, considering the network's commitment to the franchise and the lower production costs of animated shows, an animated adaptation is not entirely out of the question.
Additionally, Kirkman shared that he is not currently involved with the writing of any of the current Walking Dead spinoffs.
He also expressed his satisfaction with the TV show's ending and praised showrunner Angela Kang for her handling of the final seasons.Kirkman admitted that he enjoyed the parts of the TV series that deviated from the comic books, but he still desires an animated adaptation that stays more faithful to the source material. Aside from the mentioned spinoffs, another one titled The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is set to premiere on AMC in 2024 and will feature Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira reprising their roles as Rick Grimes and Michonne.
